Aside from placing an open tub of baking soda in the fridge to absorb offensive odors, there are plenty of other ways to use this wonderful little product to your advantage around the home:

Baking soda in the kitchen

With baking soda sprinkled onto a damp cloth or sponge, you can clean and shine up, a wide variety of surfaces. Did you know it can even be used to safely clean fruits and vegetables? Simply add a teaspoon of baking soda to a bowl of water, pop in the fresh produce and leave it to soak for a few minutes. Then, give it a light scrub and you’ll find all the layers of wax and harmful pesticides have disappeared.

When it comes to bakeware and containers stained orange by spaghetti Bolognese, you can either soak them by adding four tablespoons of baking soda to a quart of water and leaving them overnight, or wipe them down with a paste made from baking soda and water.

Baking soda in the bathroom

If your curling irons have gotten grubby, a paste of baking soda and water gently scrubbed onto the surface can help get rid of caked on styling products.

For blocked or slow running drains, pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain and them half a cup of vinegar. Once the fizzing has stopped, pour several cups of hot water down and repeat if necessary.

Baking soda can also be applied directly to stinky shoes; sprinkle it inside, leave them, and simply shake out the excess powder to wear them again.

You can also add an open tub of baking soda to your bedroom closet to help neutralize any musty odors that might be lurking in there.

Baking soda in the living room

It can be sprinkled over smelly upholstery and left to sit for around a quarter of an hour, before vacuuming it off.

To create your own room spray for use all over your home, combine a tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of your favorite smelling essential oil, shake it up and pour it into a spray bottle mixed with water.

If you’ve got a fireplace with glass doors that have seen better days, try sprinkling some baking soda onto a couple of sheets of damp, scrunched up newspaper, and scrub it all over before wiping off.

By adding a cup of baking soda to your usual dose of detergent when doing the laundry, you can brighten up your clothes and linens.

If you use reusable diapers for your baby, try soaking them in a pail of water and baking soda to help eliminate smells.
